Chapter 11

WITH TWO DAYS left to Lyn’s “vacation,” sorting laundry took on a new level of ordinary.

“Doesn’t feel real, does it?” Diana said as they sat down to lunch. “Forty-eight hours ago we were talking to aliens. Today I’m reviewing the list of students for the new year. Looks like a good class of kids.”

“Any Johari?”

Diana snorted a laugh. “Wouldn’t that be something.” She poked at her salad. “Are you serious about letting them operate on your brain?”

“Operate makes it sound icky and invasive.”

“You have no idea what their procedure would be.”

“I know. And no, I wouldn’t let them break open my skull, but the idea of getting this implant out of me is extremely tempting.”

“What if it’s the only thing I find attractive about you?”

Lyn tossed a piece of carrot at her. “You only love me for my mind!”

Diana retrieved the carrot and tossed it back. “Too bad you can’t add any of this to your memoir.”

“Who says I’m writing one?”

“Speaking of, we got a notice to pick up a package at the Post Store. From Zoya, so I imagine it’s her book.”

“In print? Not electronic?”

“Must be. I can’t remember the last time I read a book in print.”

“I think I’m with Sharyn,” Lyn said. “Not sure I’m ready to revisit that saga, but her take should be interesting. I wish I could tell her about this unfolding saga. I’d promised her I would let her know if I ever did this again.”

“She’s a hundred and thirty-four. I don’t think she expects to go along. You can tell her after.”
